How to prepare for job interviews

Interview preparation is a crucial step in the job search process that involves getting ready to show your skills, experiences, and personality to potential employers.

Without a clear plan interview preparation can be overwhelming. Here are 12 key aspects of interview preparation. 👇

1) Research the Company 🤓

Try to learn as much as you can about the company you're interviewing with. Research and understand their products, services, culture, values, recent news, and any industry trends. This knowledge will help you stay confident, tailor your answers and show your genuine interest in the organization.

2) Understand the Role 🔎

Make sure you thoroughly review and read the job description and requirements. Try to identify the key responsibilities and skills needed for the job role. How does your background align with these aspects? Prepare examples to demonstrate how you would fit the job role.

3) Practice Common Interview Questions 💪

Familiarize yourself with common interview questions, such as "Tell me about yourself," "Why do you want to work here?" and "What are your strengths and weaknesses?". It’s important to practice concise and compelling answers that highlight your qualifications and expertise.

4) Prepare STAR Stories 🌟

Be ready to share Situation, Task, Action, and Result stories aka STAR Stories that demonstrates your accomplishments, problem-solving abilities, teamwork, and leadership. These stories help provide concrete examples of your skills in action.

5) Behavioral Interviews 🐒

Have in mind that some interviews focus on behavioral questions that assess how you've handled situations in the past. Prepare examples using the STAR Story method that illustrate your adaptability, communication, decision-making, and conflict resolution skills.

6) Develop Questions to Ask 🤠

Research and prepare (thoughtful) questions to ask the interviewer to demonstrate your interest. It also helps you to gather information to assess if the role and company are the right fit for you.

7) Dress Appropriately 👖

Choose an outfit that is appropriate for the company culture and industry even though the interview is held virtually. Generally it’s better to be slightly overdressed than underdressed.

8) Plan Your Journey 📍

For in person interviews, plan your route and transportation in advance to ensure you arrive on time.

For virtual interviews, test your technology, camera, and microphone beforehand.

9) Review Your Resume 👑

Be ready to discuss any aspect of your resume in detail, and make sure to highlight experiences, skills, and achievements that are relevant to the role.

10) Practice Good Body Language 💃

During the interview, try to maintain good posture, make eye contact, and offer a firm handshake (if in person). A simple smile can leave a lasting impression.

11) Manage Nervousness 🧘‍♂️

If you are feeling nervous before an interview don’t worry, it’s normal. Try practicing relaxation techniques, deep breathing, or visualization to help manage anxiety before, during and after the interview.

12) Follow-Up Plan 💖

Always, always, always, have a plan for sending a thank-you email after the interview, expressing your gratitude for the opportunity and reiterating your interest in the role.

Remember that interview preparation helps you present your best self and increases your confidence before, during and after the interview.

Make sure you tailor your approach to each specific interview and company, showcasing your unique strengths, qualifications and interest.

Good luck!✨
